A trash-to-table mindset – 1 ingredient cocktails

The London based restaurant Duck & Waffle launches one-ingredient cocktails, where they explore the level of flavour achievable from one ingredient.

The menu features 10 cocktails named after the ingredients they are based on, such as Olive, Tomato, Avocado and Red Pepper. Each part of the ingredient is used – from tomato skins and red pepper stalks to spent coffee grounds and walnut shells – to showcase its versatility and minimise waste.

‘We have amazing ingredients to work with, why bastardise them with other flavours? I want them to shine in all their glory,’ Rich Woods, head of cocktail development at Duck & Waffle. ‘I wanted to illustrate how much flavour can be extracted from a single ingredient and show the levels of complexity that can be obtained from multiple elements of a single source.’

Basically, what we see in the markets is that mixologists are increasingly adopting a Trash-to-table mindset, repurposing ingredients that are typically discarded to create innovative new serves.

Yours, Fran

Innovation – Ani Liu has used emerging technologies to create human-scented perfumes

Ani Liu makes human-scented perfume by capturing volatile molecules from a person’s garment in a solvent for several weeks and then distilling the solution through traditional glassware.

Imagine bottling the scent of someone you love, eternalizing them forever, allowing you to dive into a fond memory of that person with just one whiff. Ani Liu has figured out how to make this sci-fi sounding fantasy a reality.

Liu is an artist who uses technology and science to develop multi-sensory experiences. Her work pulls from tools used in architecture, augmented reality, and synthetic biology—creating art that examines the social, cultural, and emotional effects of these emerging technologies.

Who did she bottled so far? She did around six people: Her husband, herself, her parents, a lab mate, and the chemist that was helping out. Using her parents … was very emotionally driven. She knows there will be a time when they pass away, so it was to create a time capsule of them before they passed.

It’s time for the weekend!!! Yours, Fran

In a secret room hidden in the ever-sophisticated Berkeley hotel in London, there exists an immersive cocktailing experience like no other on the planet…

23731c14e813ccb4b1cfad873c05bccf

It’s called “Out of the Blue”, and it’s something like a cross between a very fancy cocktail bar and a very advanced virtual reality project. Rest assured, it’s the first of its kind—and a substantial amount of booze is involved.

To participate, you’ll you’ll visit the website and make a reservation. The room only accommodates four people per hour, so you can imagine it’s a pretty hot ticket…

The room is a 360-degree projection environment, meaning you’ll be surrounded on all sides by screens capable of transporting you to some very nice places. Thankfully, they’ve specifically designed film, combined with molecular scents, to match a totally bespoke set of four taster-sized cocktails.

The whole experience is basically cocktail-induced synesthesia.

Enjoy your sunday! Yours, Fran

Business opportunities for sleep are wide and far: meet the Snoozeliner, a night bus equipped with designer beds and the latest technology, including olfactory relaxation, to promote optimal rest.

Snoozeliner

Tired of the hustle and bustle of public transport, which is hardly conducive to catching up on lost hours of sleep? An architectural firm based close to London, has created a vehicle for people leaving the capital after a night of partying that enables them to rest during their journey home: the Snoozeliner is equipped with designer beds and the latest technology to promote optimal rest.

Sound insulation and memory foam mattresses

The result of a collaboration between architectural firm Andersson-Wood and high-tech mattress brand Simba, the Snoozeliner features 14 futuristic looking capsules that can accommodate sleep-deprived travellers. It’s impossible to miss your stop: stewards come to wake travellers when they have reached their destination.

Snoozeliner

The night bus offers dreamy sleeping conditions: in addition to a memory foam mattress, the capsules are equipped with soundproofing insulation, opaque blinds and a soft light in amber, the most relaxing hue.

Olfactory relaxation

Travellers can even choose from a selection of room scents according to their personal needs that have been selected by aromatherapy specialists: want a heavy restorative sleep, or perhaps you are looking to dispel the first signs of a hangover? In development for the past four months, the Snoozeliner is expected to reach eight roads in the UK, including those leading to London, Leeds, Manchester and Birmingham, from Autumn 2018 onwards.

A British woman who can smell Parkinson’s disease has helped scientists discover 10 molecules linked to the condition which could lead to the first diagnostic test.

Joy Milne, conducting an experiment by sniffing a t-shirt to see if it’s owner has Parkinson’s disease.

It all began when Mrs Milne claimed she detected a change in the odour of her husband six years before he was diagnosed with the condition.

When researchers conducted tests with Mrs Milne they found that she was indeed able to distinguish people living with Parkinson’s from people without the condition by smelling skin swabs taken from both groups.

Scientists have now find 10 molecules that they believe Mrs Milne is sniffing

In one case, Mrs Milne identified an individual who had Parkinson’s, but at the time had not been diagnosed yet with the condition, because the person had no symptoms.

Now scientists have identified the 10 molecules which appear in high concentration of the skin swabs from Parkinson’s patients.

Our future looks much brighter! Happy holidays for you! Yours, Fran   Ähnliches Foto

The partnership between By Kilian fragrances and Fleur Du Mal lingerie gets us to a glamorous level with their new line of scented lingerie. Respective brand founders Kilian Hennessy and Jennifer Zuccarini have joined forces ahead of the holiday season to create a range of undergarments, robes, night sets, and even lace cuffs ($68 to $595), all infused with one of Kilian’s most-loved fragrances.

Fleur Du Mal

“There’s something intriguing and intimate about fragrance and lingerie that I’ve always wanted to explore,” Zuccarini says. “With this collection, we’ve been able to add an element of sensuality that enhances the experience of intimacy.”

So, what makes these pieces different from simply misting your panties with your favorite fragrance?  The lace of each item is actually infused with fragrance enclosed in gel micro-capsules, which are designed to last anywhere from 4 to 5 washes.

The scent in question? Kilian’s Love, Don’t Be Shy ($260; net-a-porter.com), which is a sweet, sensual mix of honeysuckle, caramelized sugar, jasmine, bergamot, and vanilla that plays well with the chemistry of your skin.

I wish you a lovely rest of the week! Yours, Fran

Tippling Club’s new cocktail menu celebrates senses, not preferences

Eight years after it introduced Singapore to the possibilities of progressive cuisine and modernist cocktails, Tippling Club remains ahead of the curve.

For its latest drinks list, chef-owner Ryan Clift and head bartender Joe Schofield teamed up with perfume house International Flavors and Fragrances (IFF) to kick start the design process. Instead of relying on an expressed fruit peel to lay a final aromatic touch to an already designed cocktail, the duo wanted to begin with a scent – and quite literally lead customers by the nose.

Makes me hungry for more funky home creations 😉
