Cyrano is a portable scent speaker from oNotes that enables users to create and share bespoke olfactory playlists. Cartridges inside the device dispense scents that are designed to alter a user’s mood. An accompanying app enables users to switch between different scents and adjust their intensity.

Cyrano’s curated scent playlists, termed mood medleys, emit a sequence of aromas that each last for several minutes to keep users’ senses engaged. With names such as Get Energy and Get Relaxed, the playlists are designed to accommodate different moods.

The device ships with the Natural Moods cartridge set, which features 12 notes that range from the familiar, such as lavender and peppermint, to the unexpected, such as suntan and Venetian bellini. Users can also create their own mood medleys and share them with other Cyrano users.

Odorama and other smelly stories !?!

Last week i attended a smelly evening organized by Mediamatic Amsterdam. Odorama is a new program by Mediamatic in collaboration with Caro Verbeek, an art historian who is especially interested in the sense of smell. Odorama concerns everything that reaches and effects the nose. The program will explore olfactory art and design that is experimental and challenging, sometimes known and sometimes unknown.

Beautiful glass design to capture olfactory memories

French design student Charline Ronzon-Jaricot has created a device that releases a bespoke scent during a moment users would like to remember.

The prototype for the Evanescence project comprises an inverted glass flask suspended above a small plaster stone.

At a chosen moment, the user breaks the tip off the flask to release one drop of the liquid scent. This is soaked up by the plaster pebble. The intention is that the user removes the pebble from the device and stores it away until they want to recall that specific moment, when the scent should evoke memories of the chosen event.

To enable just one drop to be released, Ronzon-Jaricot designed the flask with a small glass ball that obstructs the broken tip, allowing just one drop through. The flask was hand-blown by the Silicybine society in Paris.

Ronzon-Jaricot worked with Parisian perfumer Sarah Burri to create a new scent that wouldn’t have any pre-existing associations, using only synthetic molecules.
