German design student May Kukula has created a Moroccan-inspired pot and a set of tools that enable users to “cook” their own bespoke scents.

To create smells, a mixture of ingredients is boiled in a porcelain bowl; simmered over a candle flame, the smell evaporates through a hole in the lid and emits a scent for fragrancing a room.

This is how it works:

Beautiful design and great natural approach! Loving it! Yours, Fran

Tel Aviv student Iftach Gazit has designed food bags that can be added to the laundry cycle to cook dinner at the same time. The Sous La Vie bags, which were designed as part of Gazit’s Industrial Design course at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, rely on the sous-vide method of cooking.

This immerses vacuum-sealed food in hot water over a long period of time, and ensures meals are evenly cooked and stay moist. Gazit’s bags are made from waterproof Tyvek paper, which keeps the food soap-free.

London Design Festival 2016: London artist Zuza Mengham has created an exhibition of crystal-shaped resin sculptures as a physical interpretation of Laboratory Perfumes‘ range of scents.

Mengham based each brightly coloured sculpture in the exhibition, titled Sculpting Scent, around the brand’s gender-neutral fragrances.

This includes scents like Atlas, containing notes of pipe tobacco alongside rum, vanilla and hay.

Mengham interpreted the different compositions of the fragrances as contrasting colours, angles and visual effects using resin.

She shows citrus scents as clear yellow, and layers translucent resin over speckled, slate-coloured sections to reflect combinations of notes.

The artist has also created pieces with internal patterns that resemble smoke, bubbles, and ink dropped into water. Transparent and opaque sections are placed alongside one another to create light and colour effects.

To me, those sculptures seem to be the perfect encapsulation of scent! Yours, Fran

Inflatable plastic dome in London

London based design studio Loop.pH has created an inflatable plastic dome by London’s River Thames that was pumped full of scented vapour to create a gathering space intended to replicate the atmosphere of a traditional bathhouse.

Named the Horticultural Spa & Apothecary Experience, the installation consisted of an inflatable PVC membrane. Pot plants were set into the pockets of a latticed birch plywood arch that formed an entrance to the structure.

A slit in the plastic skin allowed visitors to slip into the misty interior, where scented vapour produced by adding essential oils and plant extracts was pumped into the bubble-like dome.

The aromatic mists were developed with medicinal herbalists who advised on the properties of each plant and will be dispersed through a nebuliser fog machine more typically used in agricultural warehouses.

The Daily Fog Menu included a refreshing grapefruit, lemon balm and peppermint scent that will be dispensed in the early part of the day, a more invigorating bergamot, juniper berry and parsley concoction for mid afternoon, and a soothing bedtime fragrance comprising chamomile, lavender and basil oil in the evenings.

The event took place in June in London. Yours, Fran

Beautiful glass design to capture olfactory memories

French design student Charline Ronzon-Jaricot has created a device that releases a bespoke scent during a moment users would like to remember.

The prototype for the Evanescence project comprises an inverted glass flask suspended above a small plaster stone.

At a chosen moment, the user breaks the tip off the flask to release one drop of the liquid scent. This is soaked up by the plaster pebble. The intention is that the user removes the pebble from the device and stores it away until they want to recall that specific moment, when the scent should evoke memories of the chosen event.

To enable just one drop to be released, Ronzon-Jaricot designed the flask with a small glass ball that obstructs the broken tip, allowing just one drop through. The flask was hand-blown by the Silicybine society in Paris.

Ronzon-Jaricot worked with Parisian perfumer Sarah Burri to create a new scent that wouldn’t have any pre-existing associations, using only synthetic molecules.

Beautiful design to look at! Yours, Fran

Primordial Perfume – a cool urban experience

Step into a volcanic chamber of olfactory wonder for perfumer Illuminum’s latest pop-up store.

Italian architect Antonino Cardillo has transformed a room inside one of Dover Street’s Georgian buildings into an ‘Apollonian and Dionysian grotto’, importing a rough finished plaster made using ash from Mount Vesuvius and putty lime. The contrast between the traditional exterior and primal interior is compelling, and the space combines some olfactory trends that have emerged since Melbourne’s Hyper-Natural exhibition in 2014.

The space is designed to be dramatic and highly sensory, and the 37 fragrances displayed in hanging glass vials by artist Elliot Walker, reminiscent of Dior’s perfume testers, invite customers to experience them in a more intimate way. ‘Stripping away… encourages a more physical and intuitive experience of scent,’ Illuminum creative director told Dezeen.

Yours, Fran
