Re-inventing fine fragrances – water based perfumes

When someone thinks of perfume the first thing that comes in mind is alcohol. The second thing might be oil, but no one ever thinks of water. In an attempt of total fragrance re-invention, three brands create organic water-based perfumes to prove that simplicity can be miraculous.

“SCENT IS LIFE”. For Christopher Brosius, the creator of CB I Hate Perfume, the point of a perfume is its scent. As he argues “Your sense of smell is one of the most important factors that defines you as YOU. Perfume is meant to be enjoyed.”

In his effort to create a fragrance that creates feelings and memories, Brosius used the challenging base of water and managed to mix it with oil even if it isn’t rather easy.

Other examples of water based perfumes are Eau Triple by Buly 1803, and Pure Rose and Pure Neroli by Behnaz.

Could the use of water instead of alcohol catch-on as consumers look for more ‘natural’ and ‘less harsh’ options?

Yours, Fran

Electronic Nose to detect diseases in future

Researchers have built a sensitive electronic nose that can detect pesticides and nerve gas in very low concentrations, an advance which may help screen someone’s breath for lung cancer and multiple sclerosis (MS) for instance.

The best-known electronic nose is the breathanalyser. As drivers breathe into the device, a chemical sensor measures the amount of alcohol in their breath, researchers said. This chemical reaction is then converted into an electronic signal, allowing the police officer to read off the result.

Alcohol is easy to detect, because the chemical reaction is specific and the concentration of the measured gas is fairly high. But many other gases are complex mixtures of molecules in very low concentrations. Building electronic noses to detect them is thus quite a challenge. Now, researchers from KU Leuven in Belgium have built a very sensitive electronic nose with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs).

“The concentrations we are dealing with are extremely low: parts per billion – a drop of water in an Olympic swimming pool – and parts per trillion,” he added.

Other applications for this nose could be the signature scent of a product to find out whether food has gone bad or to distinguish imitation wine from the original,” he said.

The future looks promising! Yours, Fran

Smoking alcoholics – literally speaking!

1 Cathedral street, London, next to UK’s earliest gothic cathedral and on the site of an ancient monastery… What else than Alcoholic Architecture could possibly happen here?!?

Bompas & Parr’s Alcoholic Architecture is located in Borough Market, featuring a walk-in cloud of breathable cocktail as part of an installation that explodes drinks to the scale of architecture. In this fully immersive alcohol environment – the cloud is entirely composed of fine spirits and mixer at a ratio of 1:3 and made using powerful humidifiers to super-saturate the air – alcohol enters the bloodstream through primarily the lungs but also the eyeballs.

The drinks list is entirely comprised of spirits and beers created by monks: potations such as Chartreuse, Benedictine, Trappist beer and even the notorious Buckfast – a savage fortified wine. All will be featured in elegantly balanced, refined and luxurious conventionally served drinks that guests can take back into the cloud.

Visits to Alcoholic Architecture are based on timed entries and experiences are limited to a maximum of 50 minutes per group. A session costs between 10-12,50 GBP.

It was about time! The world was waiting for this 😉 Yours, Fran
